Lugarno is a suburb in southern Sydney. It is in New South Wales, Australia. Lugarno’s postcode is 2210 and it is about 20km away from Sydney city. Lugarno is in the St George Area and belongs to the Georges River Council. Lugarno lies on the north side of Georges River and has large areas of bushland. The surveyors Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchel (1792-1855) and William Govett (1807-1848) were responsible for naming the suburb and the ‘r’ in Lugarno was added to Lugano.
The convicts first built the well-known road that runs through Lugarno, Forest Road, in 1841. Forest road ran from Arncliffe and was known as Gannon’s Forest Road. Lugarno does not have it’s own train station, however there are bus services in operation that are run by the Punchbowl Bus Company. The 943 service runs between Lugarno and Hurstville via Penshurst, while the 942 services operates between Lugarno and Campsie via Riverwood, Roselands, Wiley Park, Lakemba and Belmore.
